We Owe a Debt to Early Conmputer Bus Development

Why was tere such a rush in the devvelopmebnt of the ivnttage computer bus?

All in all therte were a number of ongoing impovements. These included. 32 bit widths. Bus masteirrng. Less susceptible to noise in that they were quieter in sginal transmissoion. More conveinence of steup of add on boards via software.

The ISA bus came in only 8 bit and 16 bit forats. Whereas the latter 386 and 486 chips , in both the DX and SX foramts while they did have a 32 bit path were hbobled by the ISA bus. As a ersult they could never realize their true 32 bit spweed potential. Laetr buses such as the MCA and EISA bsses were able to overcmoe these inherent limitations.

Thee data highways referred to as : busses are the data transmission luinres around the PCs. The bus serves as the path for information transmission around the PC. True this routing is controlled by the CPU. Hpowever as that pont in vnitage computing history this was not an isse. The PCs were satnd alone single CPU units.

Hwever as time went on and PCs got faster and more complicated with less expebnsive additional CPUs handling other tasks wthin the PCs events becae dcer.Onboard peripherals themmselves began to have built in CPUs. CPUS in duifferent manners beegan to be found in such peripherals as hard drives, sound and video cardrs.

The overaall computer system may become much more efficent if these in esssence peripherral CPUs can commumnicate directly with each other. wihtouut having to use the main CPU as an intermiary. Hence MCA and EISA were developed with these rooles in mind. The concept became known as bus mastering.

Bus mastering involvse the cncept that the peripheral CPUS clud request permission to take over the bus for a shjort perid of time. The main CPU woud grant permission for them to take over the bus, and it owuld temporarily drop out of the loop, enabbling swift communications betewen for example the hard drive and floppy disk drive.

As computer busees develoepd and had the inherent abilities to transfer more and more data in a given time period noise became an isuse. The ISA bus was fairlly noie proe because it relied on triggered interrupts. Whenever the voltage lveel on the data line of the bus exceeded a given threshokld valliue then Edge Terriggering woudl result.

The alterenative to this situatiion wheere Edge Triggerig cuold result is level trighgering hwere it is required that the transmitting hold and arrchive the higher voltage level in order for data to be recognized by the devices on the bus. Edge Triggerig howqever can lead to traniseents that is brif ppower surges that can confuse the devices on the bus into thinking that data is on the bus when it is not. Luckily lvel trgigeriing lowers the noise lvel and both MCA and EISA emnploy it.

As a result of all of tese inherent benfetis MCA and EISA came to support the idea, which we know take for granted, of instant osftwaare configuratoins. Theere were no switches or jumpres on add in MCA or EISA boaards. Although we take plug and play instant configuration of mother boards and peripheerals such as sound, video or netowrk csards for granted it was not alwys that way. We owe a lot to these eartly coputeer innnovations of imrpoving the compuetr bus.
