Skateboarding is one heck of a craze, in particular for the young ones. A recent survey estimated that more than 12 million people all around the planet are involved in skateboarding, and more than one-third of all skateboarders are 18 years old or younger. Skateboarding is technically defined as an activity wherein an individual interacts with a skateboard. A skate board is a platform with wheels that was initially conceptualized in the 1950s where skateboarding evolved into a pastime for surfers whilst the waves in the sea were too low. Plenty of people see skate boarding as a serious sport which involves a lot of skill and talent. Several international competitions such as the X Games provide venues in which the top skateboarders in the world can easily demonstrate their skills. Skateboarding can be easy, but when it comes to executing tricks and stunts, it's a completely different world all together. One needs the appropriate coaching and knowledge to be able to pull some tricks off. During the 1960s, skate boarding started to turn into a fad. Companies sold millions of skate boards that virtually resembled surfboards. They marketed skateboards back then as an alternative to surfing. In the 1970s, skate boarding took a dramatic turn as the materials used to make the skate boards were upgraded from wood to more sturdy and flexible materials. Today, the skate board is considerably better than ever before, as millions of dollars are put into discovering the best materials and designs to be used in producing them. Skateboarding is an entertaining and a challenging sport at the same time. Some people make use of skate boards as a mode of transportation. It is a relatively convenient means of getting around the city because skate boards are so inexpensive and small as compared to bicycles and scooters. You can buy a skateboard at a ridiculously affordable price, even a kid should be able to buy one from his pocket money. During those days, surfers disassembled roller skates and connected the wheels to planks of wood. This idea developed from the use of what they called the crate scooters, which was in essence a transportation and a pastime piece of equipment that was made out of a wooden crate that is attached to some kind of handle bars. Finding out the way to skateboard is more often than not done in the streets. Most of the successful skate boarders that we have at present began their careers spending numerous hours of practice on the streets. It was sometimes not that they were trying to get good at skateboarding, but simply that is how they enjoyed spending their time. If we delve deeper into the arena of skate boarding, it is unquestionably more than just a sport or a pastime, there is a culture that seemingly comes along skateboarding. In the old days, skateboarding was predominately synonymous with the "rebel" culture. Skate boarders were very often given the image of being rebels and dregs. Although, as time passes by, skateboarding has been viewed as a serious activity instead of a manifestation of rebellious angst. If you, or somebody who you know is interested in skateboarding, there is absolutely nothing wrong with giving it a try. Having said that, there are some serious safety measures that need to be taken prior to doing the activity. Wearing the proper protective equipment such as helmets, knee and elbow pads are recommended when skateboarding. They may look a bit bulky, but they will protect one from incuring serious injuries in skate boarding. The dangers of the activity are real and shouldn't be taken for granted.
